University of Miami Hurricanes Football Players Taken in the 2010 NFL Draft

The University of Miami Hurricanes had four players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. Although having four players selected was significantly less than in state rival the University of Florida, which had 9 to lead all colleges, the Miami Hurricanes demonstrated that they are on the upswing in terms of churning out professional talent.

In the heyday of Miami football the private south Florida university set an NFL Draft record with 6 first round selections in the 2004 draft. From 1995-2008 the Hurricanes established a record for the most consecutive years to have a player from their program taken in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Sadly for Miami fans they saw the fourteen year steak of first round selections come to a crashing halt when only one player from the school was taken in all of the 2009 NFL Draft (256 total picks). That one player from Miami was linebacker Spencer Adkins who was selected in the sixth round by the Atlanta Falcons with the 176th overall pick.

The 2010 NFL Draft with an uptick of four selections serves as a concrete indicator that the south Florida program is correcting its path. The four players chosen by National Football League franchises are:
Jimmy Graham, a tight end, was selected by the Super Bowl defending champion New Orleans Saints in the third round (95th pick overall). Darryl Sharpton came out in the fourth round when the Houston Texans drafted him to play linebacker with the 102nd overall selection. Jason Fox is a 6’6″ 300 pound offensive tackle that the Detroit Lions hope to turn into a starter on their offensive line after taking him in the fourth round with the 128th overall pick. Dedrick Epps, taken in the seventh round, was the final Miami Hurricanes player selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. Epps played tight end in college and was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in the seventh and final round with the 235th overall pick.

In summary the University of Miami had four players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft and those four picks consisted of one third round selection, two fourth round picks, and finally one player chosen in the seventh round. Three are offensive players and one is a defensive player.

Exactly what the future holds for these young prospects in terms of NFL success remains to be seen. The only thing that is certain is that University of Miami head football coach Randy Shannon will be following the careers of these four young men closely as their success will be linked to his legacy with the Miami Hurricanes.

The TV Shows of Miami

Miami, Florida and Hollywood, California may be on other sides of the country, nearly as far away as two US cities can possibly be. Geographically opposite, when it comes to television these two cities are a little closer; there is a bit of Hollywood inside Miami. Many television shows are filmed in the former, but set in the latter.

From the short lived series Good Morning Miami to the reality series The Real World: Miami, this is one city that rises to the occasion when it hears, “Lights, camera, action,” hamming it up for the crew and waving to fans. The following is a list of some of the more popular shows that are a part of Miami’s television lore.

The Golden Girls, 1985-1992: A show that starred everyone’s four favorite grandmas, The Golden Girls featured four women living together in their golden years. Marked by bickering, arguing, and handfuls of irreverence, The Golden Girls, above all, was marked by the love the characters had for one another. Finding a place in television because of Rose’s naivety, Blanche’s sensuality, Dorothy’s wit, and Sophia’s sarcasm, this show remains one of the most beloved in syndication.

CSI Miami, 2002-Present – Spun off from the original CSI, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI Miami is a show that focuses on police forensics – fingerprints, footprints, and follicles of hair. The show typically begins with the discovery of a violent crime – a murder or rape – and ends when the perpetrator is discovered. According to a recent Reuters report, CSI Miami is the most watched US series in the entire world.

Empty Nest, 1988-1995 – A spin-off of The Golden Girls, Empty Nest was a show about a pediatrician whose two of three grown daughters moved back home after the death of their mother. As the pediatrician’s work life is characterized by a variety of patients, and an outspoken nurse, his home life is marked by comedic drama and a next door neighbor who won’t go away. The neighbor, played by David Leisure, was thought by many as the highlight of the show with his annoying, yet endearing, antics.

Dave’s World, 1993-1997 – Based on the writing of the real-life Miami Herald humorist Dave Barry, this show portrayed Harry Anderson as Barry, working at a fictional Miami newspaper. The show itself was based on many of the real Barry’s writings, including Dave Barry’s Greatest Hits and Dave Barry Turns 40.

Flipper, 1964-1967 and 1995-2000 – It’s hard for television to ever turn down a show about, that’s right, a pet dolphin. Flipper not only had a run in the 1960′s, but came back in the 1990′s (thirty years later, it seems as though Evolution should have enabled Flipper to walk this time around). This show was a spin off of the movie Flipper and focused on a widowed Everglade National Park ranger, his sons, and their dolphin.

Miami Vice, 1984-1990 – Forever securing a place in cinematic history, James “Sonny” Crocket and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs are known as one of the best television duos of all time. A show about two Miami undercover police detectives, this show had it all: crime, action, a Ferrari, and Don Johnson in a stylish white suit.

Nip/Tuck, 2003-Present – A show about two plastic surgeons – their trials, their tribulations, their scalpels – Nip/Tuck seems to speak to the Botox seeker in us all. Filled with many soap opera parallels – back stabbing, undermining, and good old fashioned cattiness – this show is almost like a Dynasty, with a face lift.

2010 Miami Heat Preview – Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, Oh My

Now that the dust has settled on the NBA summer offseason, we can start to take evaluation of what to expect in the 2010-2011 season. This was the busiest offseason in recent memory. More big names changed teams than we have seen at any point since before the current collective bargaining agreement was put into place after the 1998 lockout. In many ways, the offseason transactions were more exciting than the NBA Finals themselves – which, despite going seven games, were a bit of a dud in terms of excitement. When the MVP of the series goes 6 for 24 in the deciding game, the quality of basketball can very much be in question.

The Los Angeles Lakers may have won the title last year, but the Miami Heat – without a doubt – won the NBA’s offseason. The Heat landed the two most coveted free agents on the market, all while managing to keep a solid supporting cast in place. The additions of Lebron James and Chris Bosh were not completely unexpected, news began to leak of this a couple weeks in advance, but it was expected that the rest of the roster would have to be gutted to work these two players into place. That most certainly did not happen.

Any preview of the Heat will have to begin with their Big 3. With apologies to LA (Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom), Boston (Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen), and San Antonio (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker) – this now the biggest Big 3 in the league. Lebron is the reigning MVP of the league, Wade has been an NBA Finals MVP, and Bosh single handedly made the Toronto Raptors relevant for a few years despite a terrible supporting cast. Lebron and Wade are two of the top three players in the entire league, Bosh is in the top 10-15 range. Each brings a multitude of skills (more than just scoring), although none of the three is a plus defender – many in the media will give Lebron too much defensive credit when he essentially has just played “rover” on defense the past two years and let teammates take the tougher assignments. How these three complement each other and show an ability to work together (share the ball) will ultimately be the number one determinant of the Heat’s level of success.

But the Heat’s roster does not stop there. The Heat also added Mike Miller and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Miller is quietly coming off one of the great shooting seasons in NBA history with a bad team (Washington). If he hits anywhere near the 48% from three point land that he did a year ago, that will help create space on the floor and prevent defenses from being able to double any of the Big 3. Ilgauskas is older and slow of foot, but he still has a dependable outside shot and has the size to defend the legitimate bigs around the league. In addition to the additions, the Heat also return Udonis Haslem (who was integral to the 2006 Championship run and took less money to stay), James Jones (another solid perimeter shooter), Mario Chalmers (coming off a disappointing sophomore season, but does have perimeter skills and defends the ball well), and Joel Anthony (adds size and started 16 games a year ago). With the exception Michael Beasley, who never quite fit into Miami’s system, and Jermaine O’Neal, who is a shell of his former self, Miami returns every major contributor off of a playoff team last year. So, once you add in the additions, this is a stacked ballclub. Which begs the question: Where will it get them?

Prediction: NBA champions…in 2011-12. This year, I am still going with Orlando coming out of the East. As good as Miami’s nucleus is, I think it will take a year for Lebron & Wade to learn how to play together. Miami also does not have anybody who can even begin to guard Dwight Howard in the post. The Heat will win 60+ games this season, but I think the rings will have to wait a year.

2008 Miami Dolphins Draft Report

The year was 1972 when the Miami Dolphins set multiple records and became, arguably, the greatest team in professional football’s history. They completed the first perfect season by winning 14 regular games, two play off games and Super Bowl VII. They also went on to be victorious at Super Bowl VIII, though throughout the next two or three decades they would never taste Super Bowl glory again. This season the Miami Dolphins hope to make its 39th season (43rd overall) the most successful yet. There have already been shakeups in management (as this is Bill Parcells first season as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Jeff Ireland as General Manager and Tony Sparano as Head Coach. This is not surprising, considering that in 2007 the Dolphins earned the worst record in the league with a 1-15 win-loss sheet.

On the plus side, this did earn the Dolphins’ first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Will the Miami Dolphins be successful? It’s time to analyze the draft picks to see just how deep these dolphins hope to swim this season. The Dolphins had been negotiating with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long since before the draft occurred. It took him a while to sign, but on April 22 the team finally secured him to a five year $57.75 million dollar contract with $30 million guaranteed. They also assured Long they would take him first in the draft. (It’s about pride, man!)

Besides Long, the Dolphins scored some other notable signings. There was defensive end Phillip Merling of Clemson, quarterback Chad Henne from Michigan, defensive end Kendall Langford from Hampton, guard Shawn Murphy from Utah, running back Jalen Parmele from Toledo, guard Donald Thomas from Connecticut, defensive end Lionel Dotson from Arizona, and running back Lex Hilliard from Montana.

So far four other draft picks have been signed to deals: Jalen Parmele, Lex Hilliard, Lionel Dotson and Donald Thomas. After the draft, the team signed 18 undrafted free agents including Scorpio Babers, Davone Bess, Titus Brown, Michael Byrne, Dan Carpenter, Jayson Foster, Dan Gore, Daren Heerspink, Aaron Lane, Selwyn Lymon, Matthew Mulligan, Kelly Poppinga, Marcel Reece, Kory Robertson, Keith Saunders, Matt Spanos, Anthony Toribio and Justin Wynn. However, time passes quickly when millions of dollars are on the line and when millions of Miami fans grow restless. The Dolphins have already released Aaron Lane and Marcel Reece-in fact that they even didn’t last a week playing for 2007′s worst team.

Fan reaction to the Dolphins has ranged from critical to mixed. Nobody argues that Jake Long was a good signing and that most of the draft picks were sensible and desperately in need to restructure the Dolphins. However, when it comes to predicting victory experts still believe the Dolphins need to rebuild over time. Plus, they are in danger of losing Jason Taylor who is juggling his NFL career with an acting gig and also demanding to be traded. Even Miami’s biggest fans admit that without Taylor the team’s success in 2008 will be a long shot. However, the 2008 Miami Dolphins get ready to play hard, anxious to reclaim the glory days of the 70s.

Florida State/Miami ACC Showdown

The Miami Hurricanes went down at Florida State last season in a surprisingly low scoring 7-10 game. It looked hopeful that the tides would turn in 2006 with the game being played down in Miami, but the suspensions of several key players including tailback Tyrone Moss and receiver Ryan Moore may have made this one tighter than many originally expected, though Miami is still favored by 3 points in Monday night’s matchup.

Miami Hurricanes 2005 record: 9-3
Returning starters offense: 5 defense: 6

The Offense: In 2005, Miami’s offense was under much scrutiny as the Hurricanes turned in their lowest point production since 1997. Larry Coker is looking for new offensive coordinator Rich Olson to revitalize Miami’s attack. This will be quite the daunting task in the opener with their starting tailback out against last season’s 14th ranked defense, but the Seminoles lost 6 of their top 7 tacklers and although they’ll be a solid defensive unit, they won’t be at their best in game 1. QB Kyle Wright, who led the ACC in touchdown passes last season, should improve along with his talented but underachieving receiving core of Lance Leggett, Darnell Jenkins, and Ryan Moore. Miami also has one of the best tight ends in the country again this year in Greg Olsen. Despite the suspensions, the Hurricanes will be able to put more than 7 points on the board against the Seminoles defense.

The Defense: It was Miami’s defense which made most of the big plays last season and it will be the defense again in 2006 with far fewer worries than the offense. Just how good were the ‘canes’ defense last season? They had the 4th best total “D” in the nation and they were number 1 against the pass. The secondary should be strong once again with the return of safeties Brandon Meriweather and Kenny Phillips. Miami’s secondary will be a major test early on for the young Drew Weatherford who has created plenty of hype for himself by breaking Phillip Rivers’ ACC Freshman record for TD’s and yards. With the problems the Seminoles had on the ground last season, you should expect to see plenty of Miami’s strength, the secondary, against Florida State’s, the passing attack, on Monday night. I’ll give the edge to the Miami defense initially, but if Miami’s offense has trouble moving the football, a tired defense could give up some late game strikes to Weatherford.

Florida State Seminoles 2005 record: 8-5

Retruning starters offense: 5 defense: 5

The Offense: If Miami’s defense does have a weakness, it’s against the run as they return just 2 defensive lineman starters and an undersized linebacker core. However, if the Seminoles have a weakness, it’s running the football. Florida State ranked 109th out of 117 Division I-A programs last year with just 94 yards per game on the ground. If the ‘noles can’t do a better job on the ground in this one the ‘canes will be able to sit back and make it difficult for Weatherford to find any open targets. The running game was a huge emphasis all spring and I expect it to be improved with senior Lorenzo Booker and sophomore Antoine Smith’s 2-back attack. Any improvement at all will free up Weatherford for an even bigger year in 2006.

The Defense: The Seminoles produce NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball year after year as their players always make up one of the fastest defenses in the country. Replacing All-ACC players and All-Americans normally hasn’t been too difficult of a task for defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, but he’s had to replace 6 of FSU’s top 7 tacklers from last season including the best linebackers in the conference in Sims and Nicholson. The ‘noles will build around senior linebacker Buster Davis who was the second leading tackler last season with 91 stops. The Seminoles defense will be young, but they will be talented and lightning fast. I anticipate them sticking with a Hurricanes offense, which won’t be a well-oiled machine with missing players and a new offensive coordinator.

Inexperience could overshadow the talent of Florida State’s youngsters on the defensive side of the ball allowing Miami to capitalize with crossing patterns and motion sets on offense. On the other side of the coin, if Miami isn’t prepared for an improved running attack out of Florida State, the Hurricanes could lose their projected ACC title in week 1.

Ultimately, Jimmy Boyd knows which team will be more prepared in the season’s first big matchup and you’ll be able to cash in big by picking up one of our premium packages on Monday Night’s game.

Transport Facilities Linking Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Port Everglades

Fort Lauderdale, known as the Venice of America has an extensive system of canals and inlets which together with the New River, provides well over 200 km of navigable waterways. Port Everglades, the city’s nearby artificial harbor is known to be the deepest port among all ports in the United States Atlantic coast south of Norfolk, Virginia. Miami is renowned throughout the world for its landmark buildings (such as the Freedom Tower, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and the Miami-Dade County Courthouse) as well as for its recreational and resort opportunities. If you are planning on traveling between these three places (Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Port Everglades), there are a few aspects to be considered. Let us discuss those aspects.

Before making any trip, you need to plan out the whole trip. You may have to incur heavy expenses or face unnecessary delays if you fail to plan out the trip. First of all, you need to decide the purpose of your trip. This is important because the type of transport that should be used is heavily dependent upon the purpose of your visit. For example if you are visiting a relative or friend in Fort Lauderdale, then you will probably carry little luggage. In this case, the best option for you is to use public transport. If you happen to be a tourist visiting Fort Lauderdale, then you will have a significant amount of luggage. In this case, it is advisable to hire a private Fort Lauderdale transportation service.

If you are a tourist landing in Miami and wishing to travel to Fort Lauderdale or Port Everglades, then it is advisable to hire the services of a Miami airport shuttle service. One advantage of hiring an airport shuttle service is that you are freed of your entire luggage since the transport service takes cares of it. Another advantage of hiring a shuttle service is that you will have ample time to choose the most preferable service (compared to hiring a taxi or using public transport). Surf through the internet and find the shuttle services which offer high quality services at low prices. You may also be able to acquire promotional coupons through the internet, which can be used to further reduce the prices.

According to some experienced tourists, a person should refrain from using the taxi service to travel from Miami to Fort Lauderdale or vise versa. They claim that taxi drivers are very rude and some of them speak very little English. If you are wishing to travel from Port Everglades to Miami, a Port Everglades shuttle service can be hired. As in the aforementioned case, booking online is the easiest method of hiring a shuttle service from Port Everglades to Miami.

College Football Predictions – 2010 Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes went 9-4 in 2009 on College Football Picks but started out 3-1 the 1st 4 games against Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma. The only loss in this stretch was at Virginia Tech 31-7, The Hurricanes ended the season with a 20-14 loss against Wisconsin. Miami coach Randy Shannon has lined them up again in 2010, the Canes open up at home against Florida A&M and then the team will travel to Columbus Ohio to face the Ohio State buckeyes on September 11th, after that Miami will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Pitt Panthers and on October 2nd they travel to death valley to go against the Clemson Tigers. Miami is on their way back and Randy Shannon doesn’t have to go far to get great players, he can go 15 miles in any direction and get some of the best high school talent in the country. In 2009 the Hurricane offense ranked 45th nationally in total offense averaging just over 399 yards per game, 31st in passing yards with 261.9 yards per game, averaged 31 points per game but the running game was a little weak, ranking 70th in the country. The defensive statistics were similar to that of the offense.

The 2010 version of the Miami Hurricanes have the most talent they have had in a long time, to put it mildly, the Hurricanes will are back. The offense is led by quarterback Jacory Harris who threw for 3,352 last year and this year they are loaded with receivers. Harris must take better care of the ball in 2010, the running game took a hit when Greg Cooper tore up a knee in the Champs Sports Bowl game but Damien Berry is more than capable of carrying the load plus a steady stream of South Florida prep stars will get the job done at the position. The Canes must also replace 3 of 5 starters on the offensive line.

The Miami defense has enough talent to be in the top 15 in the country. Miami returns 8 starters on this side of the football, the leader is defensive end Allen Bailey who had 7 sacks and 11 tackles for loss last year. Colin McCarthy is a big time linebacker who was 2nd team all conference last year, he will be teamed with the equally talented Sean Spence who had a injury riddled season in 2009. Cornerback Brandon Harris has next level potential and keep an eye on sophomore Strong Safety Ray Ray Armstrong who has all world written all over him. Miami went 7-6 against the spread, going over the total 6 times and over 7 times.

Where to Eat in Miami

Often called a melting pot of cultures, Miami is known for being culturally diverse. In Miami, you can expect the dishes to be as diverse as the people in it. Aside from the usual American favorites like hotdogs, fries, and pizza, why not enjoy something new during your stay? Miami offers Cuban cuisine and other dishes that are certain to please even the choosiest palate.

Below are some of the restaurants and the dishes they serve that you should not miss when you and your family travel to Miami.

o Joe’s Stone Crabs. If you find yourself in Miami during October 15 – May 15, also known as the stone crab season, drop by Joe’s Stone Crabs. The place has been open since 1913 and serves the delicious stone crabs with their signature mustard sauce. The only disadvantage in dining at this restaurant is that the wait time is excessively long and they do not accept reservations. If you don’t want to fall in line and wait, you can order takeout right next to the restaurant.

o Emeril’s Miami Beach. Emeril’s Miami Beach is located on 1601 Collins Avenue and people who have eaten there often have good words for the restaurant. Emeril Lagasse is one of the chefs who has his own show on The Food Network and the restaurant combines a fine dining experience with equally good food. The restaurant is perfect for sharing a meal with a special someone or a meeting with business partners.

o Porcao. The Porcao is often regarded as the best meat place in the whole of Miami. “Vegetarians Beware!” is the slogan of Porcao, and is basically a Brazilian steakhouse. A lot of user reviews praise the Feijoada dish which is served on Saturday nights, so don’t forget to stop by!

Guide to a Few Miami Luxury Hotels

South Beach is synonymous with luxury and it is home to many of the top luxury hotels in North America. These hotels throughout the Miami and South Beach areas provide all different types of luxury and hospitality from the well known chic style that is well known in Miami to places like the Mandarin Oriental Hotel which has not only the famous Miami chic style but also sports an oriental style design with imported decor straight from Asia.
To start off the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is actually located off of the South Beach area in Brickell Key overlooking the Biscayne Bay. This is ideal for those who want to enjoy everything South Beach and other areas of Miami have to offer without being right in the middle of things all day long. The Mandarin Oriental runs at a slower pace than many other South Beach hotels which can be a thing many people like or it might be too slow for people looking for a party. The Mandarin has 326 rooms and suites, all of the rooms have private balconies which are a nice touch and often overlooked at many five-star resorts and hotels.
The Setai is the next in the line of Miami luxury hotels. It is located on South Beach's prestigious and famous Collins Avenue address. The Setai is a classic example of Miami luxury with beautifully designed lobbies and all of the luxuries you would expect from a hotel of this caliber, there are no corners cut at all in this hotel. The hotel not only provides you with everything you would expect but also goes the extra mile with an in-house restaurant that is second to none including a wide array of global cuisine favorites.
There are numerous other hotels in Miami that have reached and deserve the five star statuses they have received. It is just up to the travelers to do research on each location from various sources including websites like ours that include many other hotels. Plus remember in looking for luxury hotels that they are not called luxury for no reason; the basic rooms can run near one thousand dollars a night.

Where to Stay in Miami on a Budget

Miami is home to the best beaches in the US, along with a great nightlife, various activities, and plenty of sights to see. Even if you don't have that much money, just enough for a cheap flight to Miami, a cheap hotel, money for food, and enough to rent a car, you can still make your trip to Miami worthwhile.
First of all, in order to get the best deals in Miami as possible, you should book your flight in advance, like months ahead. Also, choose the off peak season for tourists in Miami so that you can get discounts on air fare, hotels, and even car rentals.
Always remember to shop around for you to get the best prices out there. Don't settle for the first travel agency or website that you see which offers cheap flights to Miami. During off peak seasons, travel agencies compete for tourists by offering the lowest prices possible. So it is best to look around first before paying for anything.
You can still make the most out of your stay in Miami even if you're on a budget. By going for cheap Miami flights and hotels, you have more to spend on shopping, souvenirs, food, and admission fees to different sights and attractions.
